I’m running out of ideas. What for? Well, I am running out of ways to increase staff morale and convince more people to join my company. I run a small plumbing company in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne and I have about ten employees across two areas of the business: residential and commercial. The residential boys do all the house calls and deal with all the literal (word redacted) and the commercial boys do all the plumbing for commercial buildings. There are five boys per team. I would be open to hiring some women but no one seems to apply.
I’ve been wracking my brain to try and think of ways of keeping my staff happy, and when I was visibly distressed about it last night, my wife suggested that I look into getting ute trays installed. In Melbourne, the majority of tradies have ute trays on their cars but a lot of them have to pay for the installation themselves. By having the company pay, they may be more likely to stick around and feel like I treat them well.
I would just hate to lose my men to another company. I’m quite a possessive guy and I like to keep things when I can. Yes in this case the things are my employees, but the notion still stands. I want my employees to stay with me because I invested a lot of time and money into their training and it would be a waste to have them move somewhere else.
This morning when I woke up I decided to get in contact with a company installing aluminium ute canopies to get a quote on ten canopies for ten utes. The quote was reasonable and it would definitely be a good investment in my workers. Not only will it make them happy, but I can also get the canopies and trays branded to promote my business wherever they go.
