Shrewd Solar Sister

The solar power facility was so much larger than Maphira had even imagined it. Her first trip here had only scratched the surface. This facility and the adjacent solar farm must have taken years to build.

As they moved through the corridors, following Rylee, Vai came shoulder to shoulder with Maphira. She looked as if she wanted to say something, but hesitated, looking toward their current leader.

Maphira nodded and slowed her pace, trailing out of earshot and letting the rest of their squad take point. “What is it?”

Vai pursed her lips. “I didn’t want to say anything, because she’s your sister and all, but I have a bad feeling about this. Rylee knows this place too well. Like she’s been here before. I know she said she has a document but is that enough for her to know all the passwords? I mean, ‘I’d like to read the latest solar energy case study for research purposes’ is pretty hard to remember.”

Her scepticism made sense. Unfortunately, Rylee knew her sister better than anyone. “She’s got a photographic memory. Anything in that document, she’d have totally memorised. Don’t stress about it. She drives me crazy, and don’t get me wrong, it’s annoying having her here, but I trust her with this.”

It wasn’t at all true. The only person Rylee served was herself, but Maphira wanted to see what she was up to. Perhaps she wouldn’t stab them in the back, but there was no doubt that she led them with her own purposes in mind.

“I know it’s a little weird that she knows all the passwords,” Maphira said. “Commercial battery storage options is a pretty obscure one. Regardless, I say we keep going. We’ll just have to trust her for now.”

Vai bit her lip slightly. “I think you’re making a mistake. I know bringing Rylee along was my idea, but I just can’t shake the feeling that something is off here.”

Oh, something was most certainly off. Maphira would keep her eyes on her little sister. Only then would she be able to know for sure what was going on.
