Riding the Clutch

It’s draft day! This is one of my favourite days of the year because it sets me up for the next six months of fun and excitement. What is draft day exactly? It’s the day where ten of us get together and select the cars we want for our car racing club. There’s a pool of 100 cars available and there’s 10 of us in the competition. Not every car is good and some are much better than others.

You have to decide on a draft order and then make your choices based on that. It’s really fun stuff. But there are also other things to consider before drafting your car. You have to check the quality of it and decide whether the car will play to your strengths as a driver. For example, sometimes I can get a bit heavy on the clutch so I’ll need to review when the car had its last professional clutch repair before I draft it.

If a car has to spend any time at the mechanic you are penalised because you’ll have fewer resources than your competitors. What if the best car for the track is the one at the mechanic and that’s the reason that I lose the race? That would be a disaster which is why you have to really think about it first.

Unfortunately, before the draft we’re not allowed to have an independent car mechanic local to Raceview (which is where we race, funnily enough), so we have to use our own initiative and read the logbook to make our decisions.

On draft day we have three minutes each round to pick our car. There is so much to think about in this time and any pre-planning can go out the window because your original choices are no longer available. That’s what makes draft day so exciting. I can’t wait! There’s no doubt that exciting things are coming.
