My Mechanic Idea

After more than a decade of working as a baker, I’ve finally given up. It was great at first. Lots of free bread. But those early mornings are doing my head in. They’re so early that it’s basically still the previous day by the time I arrive at work. Not fun at all. I’ve had a think about what kind of job I’d like moving forward, and I’m pretty sure I already know what to do. My mum suggested I start a corporate career but I can’t think of anything worse. Sitting in an office all day? No thanks.

I’ve decided I’m going to seek out a mechanic servicing the Underwood area and ask to work with them. They’ll probably make me start as a receptionist, or maybe even a general shop assistant, but eventually, they’ll trust me enough to let me become a proper apprentice. Hopefully, it won’t take too long to get to that level. Working with cars has always come naturally to me – when I was a kid, my grandpa owned an auto shop and he would make me hand him tools and do other simple tasks. I even collected a whole heap of scrap metal in my room and built a miniature car out of it.

Thanks to that weekend and after-school work I did with my grandpa, I even know really obscure facts, like what a general log book service cost is, or how to instruct someone on purchasing a roadworthy certificate. See? I do know what I’m talking about. They might even see my potential and take me on as an apprentice straight away – assuming they have an opening. I’m going to prepare my resume today, to make sure it’s up to scratch. I’ve heard employers like colours now, but I’m not sure how to use a computer for fancy things so I might have to get my son to help with that.
