Lift to Mechanics

“Where are you going, my strange, little friend?”

Cosmo took a long breath, unsure if he’d ever be able to breathe at full capacity again. After a moment, he managed to wheeze out the location he was supposed to be going to. “Cambridge. I need to get to an auto electrician close to Cambridge. Can you get me there?”

The stranger rubbed his short beard. “Cambridge, eh? That’s quite a ways from here. Few hours, at least. Good thing for you, I’m heading straight to Hobart. I’ll drop you off along the way.”

“Thanks!” Cosmo said, settling into the seat.

He hoped that Perd was alright, back in the ruined limousine he’d recently climbed out of. What if the crazy lady who had chased him up a tree had gone back to finish the job? Well, it was too late for that. He had a mission to complete.

“So, you’re going to a mechanic?” said the kind driver who had picked him up. “Convenient, actually. I could use a car air conditioning service. Maybe I’ll get it done after dropping you off. Is the place you’re going to any good?”

“Oh, it’s the best. The absolute best. There is no better mechanic.” Cosmo didn’t have the slightest idea whether this mechanic was any good, but it was better to keep his hero happy.

What would he find at the auto shop in Cambridge? At least, Cosmo hoped it was Cambridge. What if it was actually Hobart or Brighton, though? Cosmo was absolutely terrible at remembering suburbs. It was either Cambridge, Hobart or Brighton that Tyrone had told him to go to. That was a one-in-three chance. Maybe he’d just get lucky and choose the right one the first time.

Given his recent luck, Cosmo figured that was unlikely. Maybe it would be better to tell the driver to go to Brighton. But then if he chose Brighton, he’d probably be wrong due to his bad luck.

Better to stick with Cambridge. Surely that was right.

Right?
